Autism
Autism is a developmental disorder that starts early in life, although it's not diagnosed until children reach ages 2 or 3 years. No blood test or brain scan can accurately identify the disorder. Instead, doctors rely on observations and interviews to spot symptoms and make a diagnosis.
Autism symptoms appear on a spectrum. Some people have severe impairments in speech, social skills, and movement, while others have mild issues. While autism can't be cured, therapy can help people move past troublesome symptoms. Treatment teams can also help families learn how to support the person they love.
